What follows is a short essay I wrote for a local newspaper in New Jersey, in the early 60s. It therefore contains anachronisms, and deals with matters as they were at that time. That remarkable man, the subject I wrote about, would have been 100 years of age on October 21, 2014.
Editor's Note: This piece was original published in February 2005 after the airing of ABC News (U.S.) Primetime Live program in which Randi was invited to speak about self-proclaimed spiritual and psychic healer João Teixeira de Faria, also known as João de Deus, or John of God.
During the switch to the new website, some content was archived. Since John of God is STILL actively "healing" and promoting himself, and visiting Australia later this month, we wanted to remind you that this display has been around a very long time. There are things the public should know.
The following is a slightly edited version (some material no long applicable was removed).
Randi.org was long overdue for a modern makeover. We've streamlined things to provide an easier-to-read site with regular new content and direct access to the most requested information (such as the Million Dollar Challenge). Watch for new articles on critical thinking education, skeptical activism, investigations, commentary and news. Visit SWIFT every day for surprises and new voices. Content links will also be available via the Twitter feed @jref and our Facebook page.
We are currently cooking up new ideas for the future of the JREF. Plans include a customized web site design which will provide Member's benefits and other features.

As you now know, there are major changes taking place at the JREF.
We've been successful in our mission as an educational resource, but for some time we have felt that we could be doing more to make a difference, especially with regards to cultivating a new generation of critical thinkers. So, our prime focus for the future will be to build our educational content, and to develop more and greater opportunities to promote critical thinking in the classroom.
I also want to reassure you that, never fear, the Million Dollar Challenge lives on!
And, in exciting news, we are beginning to plan TAM 2015 -- our 13th! JREF Fellow and long-time volunteer Ray Hall has agreed to be the Program Chair for the next summer's meeting. Ray says to expect a full agenda of scientific skepticism, critical thinking, Sunday Papers, informative and inspirational talks, new insights, the warmth and family of the TAM community, and all the usual magic that is The Amazing Meeting.
