As you probably know by now, James "The Amazing" Randi officially retired earlier this year. He is of course planning to join us for TAM in July which will be the last time he officially hosts this conference. Good Thinking and Practical Skepticism this TAM

Today's Telegraph (U.K.) features more outstanding skeptical advocacy and consumer information by the Good Thinking Society. The GTS reported on a shady May 4th conference featuring purveyors of alternative cancer treatments. The group was able to obtain a recording of the presentation, relate the misinformation presented, and warn cancer sufferers that these products pushed by unqualified individuals are potentially dangerous.

The Society's founder, Simon Singh, will be at TAM this year to talk about skeptical activism and also be part of the special math-themed session in honor of Martin Gardner.

Simon will be presenting on the main stage as an individual speaker as well as on a panel discussion. Simon will also be hosting a panel during the workshop session with Sharon Hill and Susan Gerbic on Practical Skepticism — Promoting Everyday Good Thinking. You can see the tentative schedule here.

We are EXCITED to bring you creative, new and different ideas to TAM this year. One of these great ideas is Gapminder.

GAPMINDER.ORG

Gapminder, founded in Stockholm by Ola Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund and Hans Rosling in 2005, is a non-profit venture promoting increased use and understanding of statistics and other information about social, economic and environmental development at local, national and global levels.

All three founders will be at TAM this year to speak on the project to fight devastating ignorance with a fact-based worldview that everyone can understand.

Gapminder started the Ignorance Project to investigate what the public know and don’t know about basic global patterns and macro-trends. Surveys are used to ask representative groups of people simple questions about key-aspects of global development. When large knowledge-gaps are found, teaching materials can be developed in those areas.

9:00-10:00pm“The Nigerian Spam Scam Scam” is a two person “multi-media” comedy lasting just under one hour.

Featuring: Dean Cameron & Victor Isaac

While waiting to say his 4 lines each week on the ill-fated 2003 NBC Drama Mister Sterling, Dean Cameron received email from a Nigerian con-artist posing as the wife and son of a dead Nigerian leader. After writing back as a sexually confused Florida millionaire, whose only companions being his cats, houseboy and personal attorney Perry Mason, Dean embarked upon a 9-month correspondence with the con-man. With Victor Isaac as the bewildered and tenacious Nigerian, the duologue, taken from the actual email, documents the hilarious relationship as it descends into a miasma of misunderstanding, desperation, and deception.

For the first time ever (that we know of), both "Science Babes" are on the same stage. Only at TAM13!

The vibrant and enthusiastic Deborah Berebichez (http://www.thesciencebabe.com/) was the first Mexican woman to ever complete a Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University. She also has a Bachelors degrees in both philosophy and physics. She is a fantastic speaker - with experience in professional theater and television. In her scientific career, she is an expert in wave propagation in inhomogeneous media. She invented a new technique to localize wireless signals in specific locations in buildings.

Yvette d’Entremont (http://www.scibabe.com/) is a bold and witty chemist and skeptical superhero, the arch nemesis of the Food Babe, busting pseudoscience with a combination of real science and humor. Yvette holds Bachelors degrees in theatre and chemistry, and an Master of Science in forensic science specializing in biological criminalistics.

Appearances of both women commanding the TAM stage is NOT to be missed.
